Coupled Atmosphere-Ocean Modeling Program Using Movable Nested Grid Techniques

چکیده
Our long term fundamental goals are 1) to develop a movable multiply nested mesh ocean model and investigate its application for air-sea interaction studies on the mesoscale, 2) to study coupled air-sea processes at very high wind speeds, 3) to investigate the capability of coupled tropical cyclone ocean models for improving predictions of the ocean response and tropical cyclone evolution, and 4) to develop model initialization and data assimilation techniques for short and medium range coupled airsea predictions.

17A.l NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS OF HURRICANE-OCEAN INTERACTION WITH A HIGH RESOLUTION COUPLED MODEL
The topic of tropical cyclone-ocean interaction has received increased attention in the tropical meteorology community over the past several years. It is widely recognized that the major energy source for tropical cyclones is the evaporation from the ocean. The sea surface temperature (SST) is a crucial parameter in this process. A negative feedback mechanism in the tropical cyclone-ocean syste...
متن کاملA Nested-Grid Ocean Circulation Model for Simulating Three-Dimensional Circulation and Hydrography over Canadian Atlantic Coastal Waters
A one-way nested-grid coastal ocean circulation modeling system was developed for Canadian Atlantic coastal waters based on an operational prototype shelf circulation forecast system known as Dalcoast3 and a high-resolution coastal circulation model developed for Lunenburg Bay (LB) of Nova Scotia. The nested-grid system consists of five relocatable downscaling sub-models, including the outermos...

sphere–wave–ocean modeling system that is capable of resolving the eye and eyewall at ~1-km grid resolution, which is consistent with a key recommendation for the next-generation hurricane-prediction models by the NOAA Science Advisor Board Hurricane Intensity Research Working Group. It is also the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) plan for the new Hurricane Weather Research ...
متن کاملAdaptive Grid Use in Air Quality Modeling
The predictions from air quality models are subject to many sources of uncertainty; among them, grid resolution has been viewed as one that is limited by the availability of computational resources. A large grid size can lead to unacceptable errors for many pollutants formed via nonlinear chemical reactions. Further, insufficient grid resolution limits the ability to perform accurate exposure a...
متن کاملDirectional Wind–Wave Coupling in Fully Coupled Atmosphere–Wave–Ocean Models: Results from CBLAST-Hurricane
The extreme high winds, intense rainfall, large ocean waves, and copious sea spray in hurricanes push the surface-exchange parameters for temperature, water vapor, and momentum into untested regimes. The Coupled Boundary Layer Air–Sea Transfer (CBLAST)-Hurricane program is aimed at developing improved coupling parameterizations (using the observations collected during the CBLAST-Hurricane field...
